Metering Auger Recommendations

Bourgault Seeding System

The PDM Pro™ Metering System is extremely flexible, with a broad overlap of achievable rates between the different auger types.  Producers can select from a number of auger options to best suit their specific requirements.

These recommendations are based on the most common configurations and cover a wide range product types and rates. Producers may vary from these recommendations to match thier particular application requirements.

PDM Pro Metering Auger Graph

Low-Output Auger (LO) - UHMW - typically used in the smallest tank; ideal for low rate products (canola, inoculant)

Double-Flight Auger (2X) - Steel or UHMW - used in mid-sized tanks; use for mid-range rate products (starter fertilizer)

Single-Flight Auger (1X) - Steel or UHMW - used in large tanks; use for high rate products (urea, peas)

High-Output Auger (HX) - Steel or UHMW - used in large tanks; use for extremely high rates (250 lb/acre+)

9000 Series Air Cart - Saddle Tank Option

Saddle Tank™ Metering Auger

  • Use a Low-Output UMHW Auger with the Saddle Tank™ (Tank #5) option.

* Note: If an optional Saddle Tank™ is NOT selected, a Low-Output UHMW Metering Auger should be considered for the smallest tank if low rate products (<10 lb/ac) are part of the intended uses, particularly if the air cart will be equipped with the Dual ASC™ option.

9000 Series Air Cart - Independent Tanks

Metering Same Product from Multiple Compartments

Be aware of how the air cart will be configured for various seeding scenarios to optimize the time between fills. When accounting for 'split rates' (using multiple tanks to deliver a single product) the total product application rate will be shared between the paired tanks, and, again, should be a consideration for Dual ASC™ or variable rate application.

Specialty Metering Augers

Bourgault Frame Mount Seeder

Bourgault offers additional metering auger options that will properly support new agronomic practices that demand rates beyond traditional practices and new features.
  • the TriMax™ Triple-Shoot System;
  • the high rate 8-section air kits on units under 60';
  • Auto Sectional Control on smaller implements;
  • high rate Faba Bean options.

Specialty Metering Augers

PDM Pro Metering Auger - Small Seed Option

Small Seed Auger (SM)

  • Achieve minimal application rates for canola and ASC™ (i.e around 3 lb/ac)
  • Consideration for an FMS™ implement when seeding extremely low rate crops (<2 lb/ac).
  • Utilizes the same liner and orifice as the Low Output (LO) auger for simple interchangeability.
  • Has a larger core than the Very-Low (VL) to further reduce the product throughput per revolution.

For use with low rate seeding applications with small granules only.  Not recommended for applying phosphorous, copper, or similar products.

PDM Pro Metering Auger - Very Low Output

Very Low Output Auger (VL)

Considered an alternative for the Low-Output (LO) Auger when an even lower range of product application ratesis required. This metering should be considered with:

  • Auto Section Control™ and low application rates (< 4 lb/ac);
  • narrow seeding implements (< 30 ft) and very low application rates (< 3 lb/ac).
  • Utilizes the same liner and orifice as the Low Output (LO) auger for simple interchangeability.
  • Has a larger core than the Low Output (LO) to reduce the product throughput per revolution.

The large core may have some limitations if used with products which have larger granule sizes.

PDM Pro Metering Auger - Faba Bean Option

Faba Bean Metering Augers (F1X & FHX)

Faba beans are notoriously difficult to meter due to their size and shape.  Specialty augers have been designed specifically for this crop type:

  • F1X Single-Flight Faba Bean Metering Auger will provide the same range of application rate as the Standard Single Flight Auger (1X) for Faba Bean seed.

PDM Pro Metering Auger - High Output Faba Bean Option

  • FHX Single-Flight High-Output Metering Auger will provide the same range of application rate as the High Output Auger (HX) for Faba Bean seed.

Dual ASC™ & Variable Rate Control

9000 Series Air Cart - Dual ASC™

When applying very low or very high rates of product, along with Dual ASC™ & and VRC, several factors influence both the minimum and maximum applications rates for the metering augers.

  • As the Dual ASC™ system stops product flow to sections, the auger must turn slower to achieve the set rate.
  • This is also true with Variable Rate Control when the product application map is calling for low rates.

When seeding very high or low rates, verify ahead of time that your PDM Pro metering auger will achieve the rates on the expected extremes of the given application rate.

  • Implement Working Width  - As the implement width increases, the metering auger will need to turn faster to maintain the same application rate for each opener.

Example:  A 1X metering auger turning at 250 rpm will apply a given product at 140 lb/ac on a 50 ft implement, but must turn at 390 rpm to achieve the same rate if the drill was 76 ft wide.

  • Seeding Speed  - As the seeding speed increases, the metering auger will need to turn faster to maintain the same application rate compared to when it is travelling more slowly.

Example:  A 1X metering auger turning at 250 rpm will apply apply 140 lb/ac on a 50 ft machine at 5 mph, but has to turn at 350 rpm to achieve the same rate on the same machine seeding at 7 mph.

  • Auto Section Control™  - This is similar to seeding with a narrow implement – as the ASC™ System closes off manifolds, the metering auger must reduce its turning speed in order to maintain the same application rate per opener.

Example:  A 1X metering auger must turn at 250 rpm to apply 140 lb/ac on a 50 ft machine at full width, but when that machine operates with only a single section seeding, the metering auger must slow to 42 rpm to maintain the same rate over what is now an 8.3 ft application width.
