for a single pass, zero-till seeding system. |

Bourgault offers a unit specifically designed
for direct-seeding and fertilizer application on pasture
and hay land operations. The Model 5730 Air Coulter Drill,
known as the Cattleman's Special, is capable of extreme
direct seeding, penetrating established pastures with next-to-no
soil disturbance. This allows cattle producers to increase
their options in pasture and forage management. The 5730
allows pasture fertilizing, pasture rejuvenation and pasture
and forage field reseeding without the usual ripping and
many tillage passes.
This is exactly what Del, Jason, and Murray Giles were looking
for. Their operation, located just west of Brooks, Alberta,
includes a 600 cow-calf operation, as well as 400 steers.
Added to this is an average seeding job of 1400 acres on
irrigation, some of which is alfalfa ground. “That's
a lot of work for three people,” stated Jason. “The
old way of seeding was just too intense. In the interest
of wise time management, something had to change.”
They decided to look for a one-pass system for their farming
operation. Some of their land has a sandy base, so moisture
preservation and soil conservation was a factor in their
decision. They also needed a seeding tool that produced minimal
soil disturbance to address their concerns about field finish.
A coulter drill seemed to be a natural fit.

For
2004, the Giles family invested in an 18 ft Model 5730
Air Coulter
Drill, equipped with Mid Row Banders® and a Model 5250
Air Seeder. When asked why they chose a Bourgault 5730 ACD,
Murray said, “We looked at others, but the 5730 looked
simpler and we felt Bourgault had a good reputation in
the seeding business.”
“Currently, we pull the 5730 ACD with a 165 hp two wheel drive tractor,” said
Murray. “Its OK, but a front wheel assist wouldn't hurt. We have used
a 200 hp tractor, which allowed us to pick up ground speed, and [we] did not
notice
any significant difference in [soil] disturbance.” A typical seeding
scenario now is to spread manure on the land, give it a harrowing, then seed
straight
in. Murray notes, “Trash clearance has not been a problem, nor has penetration.
Germination has been excellent, and the Mid Row Banders® do the job of
placing the fertilizer where it's needed.”
“We also like the 5250 tank. It is very accurate,” mentions Jason. |
“There were skeptics,
both the neighbours and myself,” admits the
father, Del. “We had to put up with some ribbing, but that's kind of
died down now.”
They noted that they find more earthworms in the soil. Also, more fibre is
preserved as a result of eliminating the need to work the soil before seeding. “We
have had compliments on smooth fields both by the custom sprayer and the swather
operator. They appreciate a smooth field.”
The 5730 Cattleman's Special has been the right choice for these cattle guys.
For the last two seasons it has met and exceeded their expectations. Murray
states, “We
truly do feel that after two seasons, the unit is well on its way to paying
for itself.” |
