Ray is a direct seeding
farmer that has successfully made the transistion from a
5710 Air Hoe
Drill to a 5720 Air Coulter Drill with Mid Row Banders®.
Ray has gained some appreciable benefits with 5720.
“I
have noticed that the 5720 pulls considerably easier than
the 5710. Both machines are 40’ yet I
have gone from seeding at 4 mph with the 5710 to 5 mph
with the 5720 with the same 240 H.P. tractor. Because soil
moisture is conserved before seeding and there is very
little disturbance, I get nice emergence with the 5720.
There is not a problem with straw impeding penetration.
In desiccation tracks, the disc snaps through the problem
straw allowing the seed to be properly placed. I have good
chopping and spreading equipment on my combine; this is
important. Sometimes heavy cross winds can develop that
do not allow even spreading of the chaff from the combine
leaving chaff clumps. There is more of a problem penetrating
these clumps of chaff than penetrating problem straw,” comments

Seeding and
harvesting legumes can often take extra effort to get the
job done. For Ray the 5720 make growing peas more pleasurable. “Because
the disk does not dig up stones I no longer have to “land
roll” the fields. This keeps the stubble standing
for the crop to vine up, protects the young seedlings from
the
wind, makes the crop considerably easier to harvest and
reduces the chances of disease setting in. It also saves
time and
money. The time required for an additional pass and the
hassle of obtaining a land roller is eliminated and of
coarse the
additional cost is also eliminated. The roller rental alone
is $3.00 plus fuel and tractor depreciation. No one likes
picking stones and now that I am running the all coulter
system picking stones is a thing of the past. Now that
is a feature in itself.” |
