Lavoie saves power and moisture with his 5710 Air
Hoe Drill and MRB® system. |

Initially, Louis Lavoie was performing
his spring seeding with a 5710 Air Hoe Drill equipped with
a single shoot air kit. After analyzing the costs savings
associated with one pass
seeding, Louis realized that one pass was the way to go. In the spring of
2000, Louis added double shoot boots and a double shoot
air kit to his 40’ 5710 and 3195
Air Seeder. To pull the seeding unit Louis used a 280 horsepower
Versatile 876 tractor.
In 2001, Louis changed out the double shoot boots for Bourgault
Mid Row Banders® and ¾” knives. With the
Mid Row Banders, Louis was also able to switch to anhydrous
ammonia from dry fertilizer which meant he could seed considerably
more acres with his 3195 tank between fills.

Louis had this to say about his MRB® experience. “The
Mid Row Banders added little draft. In fact, there was
not a big difference between the MRB system and the single
shoot configuration. This year with Mid Row Banders my
876 had plenty of power plus I had a 1500 gallon anhydrous
tank behind the Air Seeder. The reduced fuel consumption
proves to me that my tractor is not working as hard. I
really appreciate ability to safely put down as much NH3
as I liked with the Mid Row Banders. Because the NH3 is
delivered to you, it is also very convenient as long as
you have cell phone handy.”
“I am really
happy with how well the Mid Row Banders perform. The field
finish with a Mid Row Bander system
is really determined by the seed openers, because the banders
do not disturb much soil. I experience good emergence because
I can use a use a narrow knife to make a proper seedbed
and produce a good field finish. Although this year
was an extremely dry year, the moisture conserved by the
MRB system resulted in good yields
and high protein levels. If I had was still using conventional
tillage the result would have been terrible.”
