Mitch & Lynn Svangstu - Crosby, North Dakota
Mitch and his brother Lynn Svangstu farm together in the Crosby, ND area. This past year they seeded peas, flax,
durum wheat, sunflowers, safflowers and lentils with a Bourgault 5725 Air Coulter Drill.

Says Mitch, "Spring is a real crunch time, and we have been looking for a way to get over our ground as quickly as possible with the least amount of soil disturbance possible. The incentives available through the “Equip Program” make a coulter type drill pretty attractive. We demonstrated a competitor's coulter drill last year, but the stumbling block was the inability to get our NH3 on in one-pass. Right now there are no other Bourgault coulter drills in our area, but we decided to give it one a try as we had such good luck with our
5710. We were confident that if we did have trouble, Bourgault would be there to back us up. Looking back, it is really unbelievable how well the 5725 worked. We seeded some flax directly into sunflower stubble, and the conditions were pretty tough. I think we had the best start ever, so much so that we had 3 different neighbors stop by and ask what we used to seed that field. It really came up beautifully."

“Even though we have our drill set up to apply urea, we like NH3 because the price usually pencils out better. With the mid row
banders, we had no seedling injury at all, even at some pretty high rates. Our seed placement was good too…we seeded peas at
2" deep and flax at ½ inch. We slowed down a little bit for seed placement on our confection sunflowers, but otherwise kept the
speed at about 7 mph. I think we got our best start ever in most cases. We never harrowed anything either, it was seed, spray and
harvest. That saved a lot of time.”
“ The improvements to the 6000 series air seeder cart were phenomenal. One day we set the machine to seed 2.8 lbs./acre
of sunflowers, and put in enough seed for 160 acres. We finished the field at 158.9 acres with a handful of seed left – I’d say it’s the
best cart out there. You can go from alfalfa all the way to confection sunflowers with no meter changes. That’s pretty nice. The monitor is simple and user-friendly as well.”
"At the end of the day, we are very happy with our Bourgault. It’s built good and heavy — like it was made for our area. We go from heavy
clay to light soil, so we need a machine that is versatile. We know the company will stand behind us if we do have any unusual trouble.
They have a good reputation to make it right. Even a bushel or two an acre makes a huge difference and on our farm the Bourgault has done very well for us."
